How to Decorate Your Patio?

Decorating your patio is one of the main prerequisites to enjoying your property to the fullest. You see, the way you see your home’s backyard is really just a matter of perception. If your backyard is not arranged and maintained property, it can look quite abysmal and discourage you from ever spending your time there.

Proportionally, the living space of your home is probably smaller than the unoccupied part of the property. This would mean that you’re letting the majority of your property go to waste. In order to turn this around, you might want to decorate your patio and make the conditions there… well… more livable.

1.Prepare For All Weather Conditions

You need to be able to enjoy all weather conditions on your patio. However, if this is to be the case, there are several categories that your patio needs to fit in. First of all, it needs to have a decent cover. This can be achieved in several ways. First, you should consider parasol as the least expensive option. Roof construction like pergola is a more expensive alternative. A compromise between the two can be found in shade sails and retractable awnings.

The choice of furniture is also a huge item here. You either need detachable furniture with parts that you can move in whenever you need. If not, you need furniture that is durable enough that can withstand rain and similar occurrences. Either way, the seats should go in and there’s no furniture type that is designed to be outside during the harshest weather conditions.

2. Outdoor Lights

In the previous segment, we discussed the importance of making sure your furniture can stay outside during the coldest weather conditions. However, what about different parts of the day. You need to make sure that people can spend time outdoors during the evening hours, which is why you need to invest in some quality outdoor lights.

Sure, you can improvise and make a fire spot or a fire pit on your patio but starting a fire every time, you want to spend a quiet evening on the patio is too much work. Instead, you should get some artificial lighting, as well. In the past, people decorated their patios with candles. Nowadays, however, picking LED candles for this task may be a solution. Led candles are simpler, safer and, overall, superior in every way.

Going for standard outdoor lighting (preferably dimmable) is also a great idea. Picking bulbs in the forms of lanterns is also a great move.

3. Handle the Flooring

The choice of flooring for your patio is a huge issue that you need to take into consideration, as well. First of all, you need to decide for or against a wooden deck. This is the most elegant solution but it requires a brief (and not inexpensive) construction project.

Your other options are pea pebbles, concrete, concrete pavers, brick pavers and stone pavers. Either of these solutions will do and they all have their advantages and disadvantages. For instance, a wooden deck is relatively difficult to maintain, which is why, during the muddy season, you could benefit from some strategically placed outdoor mats. Certain flooring types might support the idea of outdoor rugs, as well

Keep in mind that flooring may also determine the scratching damage caused by outdoor furniture. So, picking a more durable solution or picking furniture with bottom padding may help out with this quite a bit.

4. Plants and Planters

One of the things you need to focus on is getting the right plants and planters for your patio. Sure, people think about how they can decorate this area with seating, furniture, and decoration but they usually forget that this is still an outdoor area and that it needs to be treated as such. Therefore, starts its transformation into a beautiful private oasis.

You can start by picking ideal patio plants and planters to match. Keep in mind that the majority of patios have some sort of screen or nearby structures. This serves as great support for all sorts of vines. If you have a nearby wall or a similar structure, you could go for some hanging planters, thus giving the area a vertical dimension, as well.

Lastly, keep in mind that it’s for the best if this area can represent the natural transition between your home’s interior and the rest of the property.

5. Provide Privacy

One of the most important things you need in order to enjoy your patio is to have some privacy. There are several ways you can create such an ambiance. A standard fence is one of the ways to do so but it’s not the most elegant of your solutions. You can also add a screen with vines (something we’ve already mentioned). Once the vines spread out enough, the transparency of the screen will be gone and the privacy will reach its new pinnacle.

Other than this, you can also erect structures, display decorations and position furniture so that it conceals the central part. Going for a baldachin-like structure (four poles and fabric) are a great way to keep the place concealed and as elegant as possible. This is definitely one of the best ways to handle the situation in question.

Keep in mind that if your backyard is protected from the prying eye, you really don’t have that much to worry about, to begin with. Still, it never hurts to be extra careful.

Conclusion

By just focusing on these five areas, you will give your patio everything it needs. Sure, it’s designed to be aesthetic. It is a small, private paradise that can make the overall value of your property skyrocket. The thing is that if you want to enjoy it to the fullest and help it unleash its full potential, there are several things you should do. In these five steps, you can make the place easy to maintain, functional in any weather and part of the day, as well as pleasant and inviting. With just a bit of effort, you can have it all.
